JULY

Earlier this year, the singer announced her 10th studio album, which she confirmed will see her venture into country, and is being made alongside her regular collaborator, producer and Bleachers frontman Jack Antonoff and country music maker Luke Laird.

The singer also spoke to NME about the album in May, suggesting that the lyrics might be lighter than her more recent output. “I’ve maybe less to say in terms of any self-revealing things like on ‘Tunnel’ or ‘Blue Bannisters’ or ‘Chemtrails Over The Country Club’, and just more melodic,” she said. “Maybe more American Songbook style?”

Since then, the sound of the album, and its release date, have been subject to speculation. In October, Del Rey addressed the ongoing wait for the project, saying she’s following her instincts after feeling a “literal energetic pause”.

“I think all the songs have been Americana and I want to wait to see what the musical atmosphere feels like,” she told People magazine. “‘Cause I don’t usually feel like I need a pause in the creation process, but if there’s a literal energetic pause that almost feels like physical, then I have to wait and I don’t know why.”

Later, she clarified rumours that the album would have a southern gothic sound following an interview with Vogue Italia, in which the ‘Born To Die’ singer said the album’s title might even change because it was so in flux. “There was a lot of American flair, too much of that very American aesthetic,” she said.

The publication reported that she went on to say: “I stopped because I didn’t recognize myself. I would like this album to be a reflection of the person I am today. I might turn it into something more ‘southern gothic’, like it was supposed to be in the beginning, and less country.”

However, Del Rey took to Instagram shortly after to say: “I think maybe there’s been a mistake in the Italian translation of what I said.”
