Luigi Mangione – the chief suspect in the investigation into the murder of a healthcare CEO – will reportedly be housed in the same jail as Diddy.
UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot dead outside a Manhattan hotel on December 4, with the killer remaining at large for several days afterwards. The suspect, initially described as a white man wearing a mask, fled the scene.
On December 9, police arrested Mangione at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania after an employee recognised him from New York Police Department images. A three-page manifesto was found in his possession, in which he criticised the American healthcare system.
Mangione, 26, had been charged with second degree murder, three counts of illegal weapons possession and forgery.
Now, CNN has reported that Mangione, who is currently in federal custody in New York, will be held in Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center – the same federal prison that currently houses Diddy. The news outlet also highlighted that Mangione’s defence attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo is married to Marc Agnifilo, who currently serves as Diddy’s defence attorney.
On Thursday (December 19), Mangione was also handed additional charges: one for murder through use of a firearm, two stalking charges and a firearms offense. CNN added that according to prosecutors, he could face the death penalty if found guilty of the federal murder charge against him.
The rap mogul is set to be jailed until his trial begins in May 2025. He previously pleaded not guilty to an indictment that has seen him charged with racketeering and sex trafficking, and his trial in the federal criminal case is set to begin on May 5 next year.
Diddy has – through legal representatives – denied all allegations against him to date. Should he be found guilty, he could face 15 years to life in prison.
He has been held in a federal jail in Brooklyn since his arrest on September 16, and has been denied bail on multiple occasions, with the first denial coming after he offered a $50million (£38.4million) bond. He was subsequently reportedly placed on suicide watch.
Combs was denied bail for the third time last month, with the judge declaring that “the government has shown by clear and convincing evidence that no condition or combination of conditions will reasonably assure the safety of the community”.
Earlier this week, it was reported that two documentaries about Mangione are already in the works.
