Waxahatchee has recently performed on NPR’s Tiny Desk series, marking her return to the show in 10 years.
The singer-songwriter – real name Katie Crutchfield – appeared on the viral series in support of her Grammy-nominated album ‘Tigers Blood’. While at the iconic eccentric office space, Crutchfield performed a five-song set which included the likes of ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ and ‘Fire’.
While at Tiny Desk, the singer reflected on her previous debut appearance at the show back in 2013 in support of ‘Cerulean Salt’, revealing she has mixed emotions about it. “I have been here before, it was about 11 years ago. I sort of rolled out of the tour van, I didn’t realize I was going in be the NPR building, I sort of didn’t really know what I was doing at all. My amp broke in the middle. I’m really happy to be back,” she told the audience.
Waxahatchee’s Tiny Desk setlist was:
‘Much Ado About Nothing’
‘Right Back to It’
‘Crowbar’
‘Tigers Blood’
‘Fire’
Though her recent performance on the series marked her second time there, Crutchfield previously joined Kevin Morby during his set on the Tiny Desk (Home) Concert Series in 2020 during the pandemic.
Crutchfield also opened up about her first time performing as part of NPR’s Tiny Desk on her Substack newsletter and shared that it had left “some room for improvement”.
She continued: “It’s giving endearingly green and inexperienced and tiny bangs she cut herself in a hurry. It’s a sweet little relic of my early 20s but I am thrilled to have been given the opportunity to go back and do it again as a full grown adult with my band and some newer songs.”
In a five-star review of her sixth studio LP ‘Tigers Blood’, NME wrote: “These songs offer a more adult and grounded perspective than ones like ‘Lone Star Lake’ and ‘Evil Spawn’; they’re about the person who feels like home rather than the one who gets your blood pumping. It’s a nice counterweight that feels emblematic of ‘Tigers Blood’ — it’s a burning fire, and it’s a warm summer evening at once.” The album was also nominated for a Grammy for Best Americana Album.
‘Tigers Blood’ also landed the 35th spot on NME’s 50 Best Albums Of 2024 list, with editor Alex Flood sharing: “The best songs make you feel like everything is going to be OK and that you’re right where you need to be in that moment. Every second of this exquisite ode to old-school Americana by Waxahatchee – from its unhurried opener ‘3 Sisters’ to the warm country ballad ‘Right Back To It’ – will put you completely at ease.”
