Lana Del Rey appears as a hidden feature on The Weeknd’s new album ‘Hurry Up Tomorrow’. Check it out below.
The record marks the third and final chapter of the singer’s ‘Dawn FM’ trilogy, and was shared today (January 31) via XO and Republic after being delayed last week.
One thing that comes as a surprise on the record is the unexpected contributions of Lana Del Rey, who appears on the track ‘The Abyss’.
Although she remains uncredited on the song, her signature vocals are heard on the stripped-back, piano-led track.
This isn’t the first time that the two have joined forces. Back in 2017, The Weeknd teamed up with Del Rey on the title track from her ‘Lust For Life’ album, and two years prior she appeared on his 2015 track ‘Prisoner’. The latter appeared on his sophomore album ‘Beauty Behind The Madness’.
The ‘Summertime Sadness’ singer is just one of a handful of collaborations on the album, with other appearances on the tracklist coming from Travis Scott, Future, Florence + the Machine, Playboi Carti and Anitta.
As highlighted by Billboard, another surprise came as the previously-released single ‘Dancing In The Flames’ is noticeably left out from the final tracklist, leading to speculation as to whether it was scrapped at the last minute or set to be used as part of a separate project.
The record was delayed by the singer out of respect to the victims for the Los Angeles wildfires. Last week he also took to social media to announce the cancellation of his one-night-only concert at the Rose Bowl in California, scheduled for January 25.
“Out of respect and concern for the people of Los Angeles County, I am cancelling the Rose Bowl concert originally scheduled for January 25th. This city has always been a profound source of inspiration for me, and my thoughts are with everyone impacted during this difficult time,” he said.
“In light of this, I have also decided to push the release of my album to January 31st. My focus remains on supporting the recovery of these communities and aiding its incredible people as they rebuild.”
In May, the record will be accompanied by a feature-length film of the same name, starring The Weeknd, Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan. It has been described as “an extension” of the album.
As well as confirming details of the new projects, The Weeknd also discussed why he plans to retire his famous moniker, and said that it doesn’t mean that he is retiring. “Everything needs to feel like a challenge. And for me right now, the Weeknd, whatever that is, it’s been mastered,” he said.
“No one’s gonna do the Weeknd better than me, and I’m not gonna do it better than what it is right now. I think I’ve overcome every challenge as this persona, and that’s why I’m really excited about this film, because I love this challenge.”
