The Rolling Stones have been reported as scrapping their plans to tour across the UK and Europe in 2025.
According to various reports from outlets including The Times, the iconic group opted against a return to touring later this year. This reportedly came following a proposed multi-million pound stop at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium being rejected, amid other shows across Europe.
The outlets state that the band’s remaining members, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood, were presented with multiple-date options for shows in 2025, but these were soon dismissed due to complications around suitable venues, travel and pre-existing commitments.
These reportedly included visits to Paris, Barcelona, Rome and four gigs at the aforementioned Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.
Hopes for a tour came after the rock veterans dropped ‘Hackney Diamonds’ in 2023 – their 24th studio album and first body of new material since 2005’s ‘A Bigger Bang’. It included guest appearances from Lady Gaga, Elton John, Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder, and featured the last recordings of the band’s late drummer Charlie Watts.
Already the group have taken the new material on the road, playing 20 huge concerts in North America last year. Reports claim that 880,000 tickets were sold for these gigs and the tour generated approximately $235 million (£185.1m) – placing it at Number Six on the highest-grossing music world tours of 2024.
Although it now looks unlikely that the Stones will be hitting venues in the UK and Europe later this year, the report from The Times states that the artists still hope to embark on a tour this side of the globe in 2026.
If the shows come to fruition, it’ll mark the first time that the trio have played in the UK since 2022. NME has reached out to a spokesperson for the band for comment.
As for Ronnie Wood, the guitarist recently made a surprise appearance at Paul McCartney’s recent show in London, taking to the stage as a surprise guest and helping the Beatles legend perform a rendition of ‘Get Back’.
He is also speculated as a potential surprise guest for Rod Stewart later this summer, as the latter takes to the stage as the performer for Glastonbury’s Legends Slot in 2025. Recently the two were pictured together at Stewart’s 80th birthday celebrations.
In a four-star review of ‘Hackney Diamonds’, NME described it as an “absolute barnstormer”, adding: “But if ‘Hackney Diamonds’ does round off the most successful career in rock music ever, it wouldn’t be a bad place to leave it. A natural end, but definitely not a normal one.”
Ronnie Wood also spoke to NME about the “explosive” songs on the album and how they would translate live. “I have complete faith. We could play the whole album, you know what I mean? But [Mick and Keith] will go, ‘Oh no Ron, that’s so ambitious’. We’re not gonna forget the back catalogue,” he said.
Last October, former Stones bassist Bill Wyman spoke about how he, Watts and Wood were only “scraping by” during the band’s tours in the ‘80s and early ‘90s, and said he wished he had left the band earlier than 1993.
