A tiny stage of the Adelphi Club in Hull, which saw performances by Oasis, The Stone Roses and more, has been rediscovered.
The stage is located in a terraced house in Hull, and has previously hosted performances from artists who would go on to become some of the biggest names in music.
It was found as the owners booked a carpet refit, and the original stage was uncovered. It dates back to the ‘50s, and was lost when the club remodelled and extended the venue in 1995.
Oasis, Radiohead, Pulp, The Housemartins and The Stone Roses all played on the stage before going on to find global fame, and their sets date back to a time when the venue was home to a social club.
Speaking to BBC News, general manager Paul Sarel said it was a “lovely surprise” to find the stage during the carpet refit, and was reminded of how “some of the most famous bands in the world all squeezed onto this tiny space”.
“When we posted on social media, we had so many people who said they remembered playing on that stage or seeing some of the most famous bands play on that small area,” he told the outlet.
“That carpet’s seen some history…It had lots of holes in it. It was stuck down with Sellotape in some places, it was right down to the boards in other places,” he added. “So we were desperate to make it look a bit better and get something in place for the next 20 years.”
Sarel also recalled how various staff members and musicians signed the stage before carpet was laid over the top. “About 20 people from the Adelphi community came down and signed it. We even had the Adelphi dog put his paw print down and had a cat come in and we took the cat’s paw prints,” he recalled.
“It’s just a bit of memorabilia, like when you do a message in a bottle and then you reveal it 20 years later.”
The refit of the carpet came from a fundraiser from the venue, which raised £1,000. The appeal was led by the young people from the club’s steering group as well as musicians from the Hull bands Black Kes and Residents Association.
According to BBC, Britpop icons Oasis played at the club in April 1994, just before they shared ‘Supersonic’ – the first single from their ‘Definitely Maybe’ debut album.
The discovery of the stage also comes as UK grassroots venues are coming under threat. Last year, for instance, Music Venue Trust delivered their full report into the state of the sector for 2023, showing the “disaster” facing live music with venues closing at a rate of around two per week.
Music Venues Trust’s Mark Davyd has since presented the findings at Westminster, and continued to echo their calls for a £1 levy on tickets for gigs at arena size and above. This allows for major labels and venues to pay back into the grassroots scene.
Huge names have increasingly been getting involved in helping support grassroots spaces. Last year, Coldplay announced that 10 per cent of their proceeds from their upcoming stadium shows in London and Hull would be given to Music Venue Trust, in a bid to help support venues around the country. Following the news, fans reacted positively on social media, with one saying “This is the start of something big”.
