Sharon Osbourne has revealed that Black Sabbath‘s final gig will feature a collaboration between Tom Morello, Tool‘s Danny Carey and Smashing Pumpkins‘ Billy Corgan.
Earlier this week (February 5), the legendary metal band announced their final-ever live show, which will take place in Birmingham on July 5. The band has also announced star-studded opening acts and special guests, which include the likes of Metallica, Slayer, Pantera, Lamb Of God, Mastodon, Alice In Chains, Halestorm, recent Grammy-winners Gojira and more.
Morello – the soloist and former Rage Against The Machine guitarist – will also be appearing at the gig, serving as music director. In a statement, the musician described Ozzy Osbourne and co’s final show as set to be “the greatest heavy metal show ever”.
Speaking to NME at Villa Park shortly after the announcement of Black Sabbath’s final gig, Ozzy Osbourne’s wife and manager Sharon opened up about Morello’s involvement as music director and said: “He is so knowledgeable on all different genres of music, but especially Sabbath.
“He’s really passionate about everything he does and is such a great mate. He volunteered and the stuff that he’s managing to put together has been amazing. He’s going to take care of all the different bands that are playing together and arranging who does what song. It’s a huge undertaking, and he can manage it all.”
She also shared the formatting of the massive day and explained: “It starts at noon, then you’re going to see one icon playing with another icon, doing a Sabbath song and one or two of their own songs, and people playing with each other that you never you’d see.”
She went on to reveal that “Tom Morello is going to play with the drummer from Tool [Danny Carey] and they’re going to have Billy Corgan with them – they’re all from Chicago so they’re all doing their bit.
“Then you’ll see Slash and Duff [McKagan] and whoever they choose to play with. David Draiman [Disturbed] is going to come up and sing, Jonathan [Davis] from KoRn is going to be here and he could be playing with [Red Hot Chili Peppers’] Chad Smith or whoever! Alice In Chains are coming and they’re playing as the band.”
When asked if she didn’t prefer the idea of just Black Sabbath and a few supporting acts, Sharon said: “No, this is a celebration – of the genre and the pioneers who started it and passed it on to all these bands. Usually this thing is done when you’re dead – so it’s nice that these guys can be alive to be appreciated!”
Tickets for ‘Black Sabbath – Back To The Beginning’ go on general sale at 10am GMT next Friday (February 14) –you’ll be able to buy yours here.
In other news, Ozzy Osbourne recently shared that he “can’t walk” in a new interview about Black Sabbath‘s final show, with Sharon assuring that his illness “doesn’t affect his voice”.
Sabbath members Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler have both shared statements about the upcoming reunion on social media.
