Sexyy Red has revealed that she could have been a permanent figure on WWE TV, adding that “rapping and wrestling are pretty much the same” to her.

In an interview with Dazed Digital, the St. Louis rapper spoke about her surprise reoccurring appearances on WWE: NXT last year. She revealed that she was offered a permanent role as a wrestler in WWE, but couldn’t find the time to train properly so she settled for a cameo instead.

The ‘Get It Sexy’ star then went on to explain the similarities between the wrestling and rap worlds: “Rapping and wrestling are pretty much the same. It’s not quite acting, but it’s kind of acting too, right? Because when we go home and take off all our jewels and gold and remove the costumes we wear, we then have to go right back to reality with our families.”

During her first appearance, she unveiled the new Women’s North American Championship belt and helped Je’Von Evans and Trick Williams win a tag-team match. The second time around, Red hosted the premium live event Battleground and hung out with wrestling legend Shawn Michaels backstage, teaching the Hall of Famer how to twerk. Back in October was her last time on NXT, giving a speech (or “cutting a promo”) in the ring before getting cut off by heel star Ethan Page.

Other rappers have involved themselves with the WWE – including Travis Scott, Megan Thee Stallion and RM, whose songs (‘4X4’ and ‘Neva Play’, respectively) soundtrack WWE’s other brands, Raw and Smackdown. Bad Bunny and Snoop Dogg have also fought in the squared circle – the former once held the now-defunct 24/7 championship.

Since Red’s WWE appearance, she teamed with Bruno Mars for the “strip club anthem” ‘Fat, Juicy & Wet’. In the accompanying music video, Lady Gaga and BLACKPINK‘s Rosé made their own cameos.

The last record Red released was last May’s ‘In Sexyy We Trust’ – her third mixtape and follow-up to her 2023 breakout LP, ‘Hood’s Hottest Princess’. The 14-track project was executive produced by her longtime collaborator Tay Keith and features rap heavyweights Lil Baby, Drake, VonOff1700 and Mike-Will-Made-It.

While touring the record, Red received backlash for her stage design, which included a large inflatable hat that read: “Make America Sexyy Again”. After her controversial set at the annual Roots Picnic last year, the prop rubbed many the wrong way and believed Red was endorsing Trump – which she eagerly denied.
