The Russian-Estonian rapper will take his track ‘Espresso Macchiato’ to this year’s edition of the annual song contest, the final of which will take place in Basel, Switzerland on Saturday May 17.

Cash, who has worked with the likes of Charli XCX and Diplo, was selected after a public vote was held last weekend (via Eurovision.TV) He was victorious in Eesti Laul, a TV competition Estonia uses to choose its Eurovision entry each year (watch below). ‘Espresso Macchiato’ won with 83 per cent of the vote.

The rapper will compete in the Eurovision semi-final on Saturday May 13. Should he be successful in this round, he’ll then head to the final of the contest a week later.

Estonia has previously won the Eurovision Song Contest once before, in 2001, when Tanel Padar, Dave Benton and 2XL triumphed with their track ‘Everybody’.

Cash, 33, emerged in the 2010s. He has released two studio albums – ‘Euroz Dollaz Yeniz’ (2014) and ‘¥€$’ (2018) – and also collaborated with A.G. Cook, 100 Gecs and Boys Noize. He features on Charli XCX’s song ‘Delicious’ from her 2017 mixtape ‘Pop 2’.
He has performed at major festivals like Glastonbury, Sziget and Roskilde.

Eurovision said that Cash “is known for his bold visuals and sounds. Additionally, he is a successful conceptual artist who combines post-Soviet aesthetics with global trends, mixing raw tenderness with twisted humour.”

Following the news of his involvement in Eurovision 2025, Cash has gone viral on social media due to looking like a certain Timothée Chalamet.

Many X/Twitter users have joked about the A Complete Unknown actor heading to Switzerland. One wrote: “Timothee just be doing anything.” A second said: “Might not be a Eurovision Song Contest winner but for sure should be a Timothee Chalamet look-alike contest winner no doubt.”

Another person commented: “First look at Timothée Chalamet in DELICIOUS: THE TOMMY CASH STORY, the upcoming biopic to be directed by James Mangold.” See a selection of posts below.

Speaking to NME in 2019, Tommy Cash described himself as “the most famous Estonian in the world”. “I’m like Justin Bieber. I’m literally the most famous Estonian in the world, definitely,” he continued.

He also discussed keeping his music decidedly apolitical, reasoning that it was supposed to be “escapism”.

“It’s just like, OK, I don’t have many friends, but none of them are into this shit,” Cash told NME. “I don’t have any friends who come into my home and start talking about Trump. And back home, my parents never talked about politics.”

He added: “I wanna do escapism. I want to take people out of their shitty lives. Out of their shitty nine to fives. Out of their shitty relationships, shitty weather, to this magical world where you can disappear for a couple of hours and get inspired, like in a movie. That’s how I approach my stuff, so I don’t see the point of going there.

“I don’t know about politics, it’s a deadly circle where it just goes round and round and nothing changes.”

Cash’s latest EP ‘High Fashion’ was released last November.

The UK entry for Eurovision 2025 is yet to be confirmed ahead of the contest’s deadline next month. Last October, the BBC revealed that the manager of 2022 winner Sam Ryder had been recruited to help find the contestant.

In other news, Samantha Mumba recently hit out at Eurovision judges after coming in as runner-up to represent Ireland at Eurovision 2025, calling them “unnecessarily rude”.

Eurovision 2024 broke global viewing figures, despite protests over the inclusion of Israel at this year’s event amid the war in Gaza. According to figures from the EBU, 163million viewers tuned into the three live events including the Grand Final.

Olly Alexander performed the song ‘Dizzy’ to represent the UK, which finished 18th out of 25 countries. He earned just 46 points from the jury, but none from the voting public.
