Damon Albarn has teased a new Gorillaz album, which is allegedly slated to be released at some point this year.
Albarn recently sat down with the French magazine Les Inrockuptibles to discuss The Magic Flute II, La Malédiction, a sequel to Mozart’s The Magic Flute opera, which saw the Gorillaz mastermind create an electronic opera for.
Later in the chat, the Blur frontman was asked about his plans for 2025 to which he responded with “I’m finishing a new Gorillaz album. One opera and one new Gorillaz album seems like enough for 2025! Unless someone accuses me of taking my foot off the gas!”

Gorillaz co-creator and artist Jamie Hewlett also commented on an Instagram post seemingly confirming Albarn’s statement, writing: “Yes, the new album is coming out this year,” with a thumbs up emoji.
The social post in which the new album is mentioned also shared that during an interview with the French Podcast Nova, Albarn shared that the album is allegedly set to be done in six weeks time.
Fans immediately took to Reddit to share their excitement and opinions. “First time I’m seeing it. I’d love another album, so I’m hoping it happens,” wrote one user, while another fan on Instagram asked: “Does this potentially mean they could go back on tour as well?”
Thought the excitement for a new Gorillaz album is in abundance, many fans were concerned about the alleged release time frame. “Because doyathing dropped and they went on a 7-8 year hiatus. Damon kept saying ‘deltarune tomorrow.’ There was a huge hiatus between demon days and plastic beach as well. At this point Damon is just saying stuff. He’s got “multiple albums of Gorillaz” kept for himself ,” shared on Reddit user.
Another added: “We kinda already knew it was coming this year. This just took it from a 99% to a 100%. Also don’t get too hyped yet, “finished in 6 weeks” does not mean we’ll be getting new stuff in 6 weeks. (Cracker Island was completely finished in 2022 (i think between the Cracker Island and New Gold single drops if I remember right) and released over 8 months later).”
The band’s last release was 2023’s ‘Cracker Island‘. In a four-star review of the album, NME shared: “Albarn and his team appear unburdened by living up to a concept, and instead turn in a consistently enjoyable record that shows why they remain relevant so far into their career. A band that was once considered mucking about on the periphery of pop are now very much defining the present and inspiring the future. You could be doing much worse for album eight, eh?”
In other news, last year Blur, opened up to NME about what the future has in store for them – particularly after their huge Live At Wembley Stadium concert film and their set at Coachella 2024.
“We can’t leave it too long because we’re knocking on,” Graham Coxon said, looking at upcoming announcements from the band. “Creatively, we’ll always be able to do something, but it’s important that we live life for a bit and hopefully not go through something so traumatic before getting back together again.
