Billy Nomates has shared a new single, ‘Plans’, and announced an autumn UK and European tour – get tickets here.

‘Plans’ is the second single from Nomates’ – real name Tor Maries – upcoming third album ‘Metalhorse’.

Maries, who recently received a multiple sclerosis diagnosis, describes the upbeat track as being like “getting on the Waltzers at the end of the world,” adding: “As I get older, and I’ve just had this diagnosis, and the world’s a fucking mess, the idea of being able to have fun or fall in love with someone is the ultimate rebellion, isn’t it? It just feels totally radical these days. And it seems to happen less as life gets more complicated. Things are only going to get worse, there’s no point being blue sky about it, but there’s also fun to be found in this two-minute whizz around that we all have.”

It follows ‘The Test’, which came out last month as the lead single of ‘Metalhorse’, released on May 16 – pre-order it here. In the week following the album’s release, Maries is set to play four instores in Nottingham, London, Brighton and Coventry, before she heads out on a full UK and European tour from September.

The tour begins in Bristol, where Maries is based, on September 24, and she finishes the UK leg on October 9 with a show at London’s Electric Ballroom. She’s then heading out to mainland Europe from November 17 with a show in Luxembourg, which will then take in France, Belgium, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands.

‘Metalhorse’ follows Maries’ 2023 album ‘Cacti’ and her self-titled debut. It’s her first album to be created in a studio with a full band, and Nomates is set to explore new genres like blues and folk.

Maries began working on it in the studio shortly after the death of her father. Speaking of their relationship in a press release, she said: “We were so close and our bond was music. That was my safety and protection in the world. Even in the care home, as things were getting worse, I’d visit him and he’d ask me what I was doing. I’d show him the new demos, or I’d have been on the radio. It sort of saved everything from being shit, because we had this positive thing to talk about.”

She also described ‘Metalhorse’ as her favourite project to date, explaining: “From the second I started working on this album, every other month has brought this massive life shift that has either been weirdly magical and brilliant, or quite the opposite. What I’m really looking for, now, is something in between.”

In 2023, ahead of the release of ‘Cacti’, she told NME: “Anyone that knows me will tell you the biggest pressure comes from myself. People try, but trust me, I will go harder. I want to push it to new places, places where you’re not entirely sure what you’ve created or what you’re doing.”
