Blink-182‘s Mark Hoppus has spoken about an “awful” date he once had with Melissa Joan Hart.
The bassist recently released his memoir Fahrenheit 182, and in an excerpt published by Entertainment Weekly, Hoppus recounted a date with the Sabrina The Teenage Witch star.
According to Hoppus, the pair embarked on a sushi date in San Fernando Valley more than 25 years ago. The pair met at the Teen Choice awards, and arranged the date after Hart’s publicist reached out to Hoppus to give him her number.
“It was an awful date. She was very nice, but we weren’t connecting,” he wrote. “Everything in her life revolved around acting and it was hard to relate to her about anything else.”
“I’m sure from her perspective, all I could talk about was music,” he continued. “We just weren’t a great match. It was tough.”
Shortly afterwards, Hoppus would go on to date – and eventually marry – his wife, MTV talent executive Skye Everly.
Hoppus’ memoir also shares details about his cancer diagnosis, which he received in 2021. He was declared cancer-free later that year.
Though Hoppus told The Guardian that the exhaustion of chemo, steroids and physical pain “crushed me for months on end”, he also said the diagnosis “brought back friendships that I hadn’t had in years” – including his tumultuous friendship with Blink-182 co-founder Tom DeLonge.
“It healed my friendship with Tom: from day one, he was like: ‘What do you need? I’m there’”, he said. “In that friendship and the love and support of people around me, I thought: you know what? I’ve had a pretty awesome life.”
DeLonge has had an on-off relationship with Blink-182; in 2015, remaining members Hoppus and drummer Travis Barker confirmed DeLonge’s departure, despite DeLonge claiming he didn’t leave the band: “I never quit the band… The ONLY truth here is that I have commitments that limit my availability this year. I love Blink-182 and I’m not leaving.”
They have since reunited to embark on a world tour and release their comeback album ‘One More Time‘ in 2023.
In other news, Sublime are reportedly working on their first album since 1996 with Travis Barker.
