Strange Basin #5 with the Zombie
Busted have spoken about how former Bring Me The Horizon musician Jordan Fish pushes them in the studio, after the musicians revealed they were working on new music together last year.
Last year the British band, consisting of James Bourne, Matt Willis and Charlie Simpson, shared that they have been working on “experimental” new music alongside Fish, with what is set to be the follow-up to 2023’s ‘Greatest Hits 2.0’.
Speaking to the Daily Star newspaper’s Wired column, Willis has spoken about what Fish is like to work with in the studio and how he helps drive the direction the band want to go in. As reported by MusicWeek, he said Fish has been “so switched on” during studio sessions.
He said: “Jordan is so switched on to melody. I love that guy. I’ve always been a big fan of him. I like Bring Me, but [Fish] as a writer, he’s an extraordinary talent. And having him in the mix in a Busted room was what I really wanted.
“What I think people think Jordan Fish is and what he actually is a two different things. Because I think people think of him as Bring Me The Horizon and were like, ‘Oh my God it’s going to be metal.
“But it couldn’t it be further from that? He’s the most pop-sensitive guy I’ve ever met. And as a lyricist, he is on my case. He’s like, ‘Make that better, do that!’”
Elsewhere in the interview, outside of speaking about Fish’s influence on Busted, Willis said it has been “difficult” to navigate being a band in the present day. He said: “We’re really not rushing it, we don’t have a record company, we don’t have anyone breathing down our neck. We’re in a really lucky position.
“It’s difficult because we’re like, ‘Who the f*** are Busted in 2025? What are we? What do we wanna do?’”
Fish departed Bring Me The Horizon in December 2023. He had been part of the Sheffield rock band since 2012 and had been instrumental in shaping the band’s songwriting approach and modern sound by adding more electronic elements – particularly on 2013’s landmark record ‘Sempiternal’. He was also part of the band for 2015’s ‘That’s The Spirit‘, 2019’s ‘amo’ and 2020’s ‘Post Human: Survival Horror’.
Last year, he spoke with NME about about working with Poppy and Architects, criticism of the ‘Jordan Fish sound’ – and what he makes of the label ‘super-producer’.
“To me, [my projects] all sound so different… there’s maybe production choices that tie things together,” he said.
Speaking about the musicians he works with, Fish said: “I’m usually attracted to artists who don’t want to go down the same road as something that’s been before. I’ve worked in rock music for quite a while, and there are a lot of bands that do sound similar. I’m usually looking for someone that wants to bring in a broader influence and blend that in.
“I can’t help but do that. I tend to go for stuff that’s quite colourful. I’m not that into drab music. I want to be like candy. That’s more my style and instinct.”
