Machine Gun Kelly has now met Bob Dylan, and he says it’s “all because of a video of me rapping in a music store 10 years ago”.

The unlikely pair were linked earlier this year, when Dylan confused fans by posting a random clip of the rapper, who now goes by MGK, on his Instagram. It came as a surprise, as, for the most part, the music icon’s social media page has only seen posts relating to his upcoming live shows and an assortment of clips from old movies.

In the footage, MGK is seen performing an acoustic set at the Park Ave CDs store in Orlando, Florida. There don’t seem to be any ties in the set to Dylan, and with no caption included, it never became quite clear why it was uploaded.

After months of mystery surrounding the clip, the two musicians now seem to have crossed paths. During the LA stop of Willie Nelson’s ‘Outlaw Music Festival Tour’ – which Dylan is currently headlining – MGK made an appearance onstage with Billie Strings, John Stamos, and Johnny Knoxville.

The following day, MGK seemed to reference the video that Dylan posted, writing on Twitter/X: “i met and had a conversation with someone last night that i never thought i’d get the honor to meet all because of a video of me rapping in a music store 10 years ago. i love music.”

As highlighted by Pitchfork, a possible reason for Dylan’s post could have stemmed from Timothée Chalamet, who portrayed Dylan in the recent biopic A Complete Unknown. Although the two haven’t yet met, the actor did make a nod to MGK while on Saturday Night Live in 2023, describing himself as “a moisturised Machine Gun Kelly”.

The outlet also suggests that Beak> and former Portishead star Geoff Barrow could be a connection between Bob Dylan and MGK. This comes as comments made by the musician in 2023 saw him hit out at The Weeknd after the latter paid respects to the late MF Doom. Barrow described the act as “Machine Gun Kelly dressing as Bob Dylan”.

Nelson’s ‘Outlaw Music Festival Tour’ will run for 36 dates, and will include performances from the likes of WilcoSheryl CrowWaxahatchee, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, and The Avett Brothers. You can find a full list of dates here, and any remaining tickets here.

Previously on the tour, Dylan had covered The Pogues’ ‘A Rainy Night in Soho’ for the first time, and broke out the first live rendition of ‘Mr. Tambourine Man’ in 15 years.

He also covered Ricky Nelson’s ‘Garden Party’ – a track that includes a reference to himself – for the first time ever, and brought out Billie Strings to perform ‘All Along the Watchtower’.

As for MGK, he recently shared footage of Lana Del ReyJelly RollShaboozey, Alex Warren and Brandon Lake singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to him backstage at Stagecoach festival.

He also recently joined Three 6 Mafia with Travis Barker on drums, for a rendition of ‘Hit a Muthafucka’ at Coachella 2025. Many fans felt that the Memphis rap group “killed” their guest heavy set and criticised the audience at the California festival for failing to “recognise the greatness”.
