Greta Thunberg has been seen wearing the shirt that Fontaines D.C. released in support of the people of Palestine.
The activist was pictured wearing the band’s shirt in a new video that raised awareness for the ‘Freedom Flotilla‘ trip. With the trip, she and 11 other campaigners set sail for Gaza in an attempt to “break Israel’s siege”.
The boat, called Madleen, is operated by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition group and departed from Catania, Southern Italy yesterday (June 1). It is attempting to reach the shores of the Gaza Strip and deliver food and medical supplies to those in the city. It also comes in a bid to raise “international awareness” of the humanitarian crisis amid the conflict with Israel (via Guardian).
In a video shared on social media shortly before the departure, Thunberg was seen wearing a Fontaines D.C. shirt that was designed to raise funds for the people of Palestine.
“[We] will attempt to again sail towards Gaza and try to break the siege and open up a humanitarian corridor by delivering aid like food and medical supplies,” she is heard saying in the clip.
“The last time we attempted this, about a month ago, the boat, Conscience, that we were about to board got bombed twice, and all evidence suggests that it was Israel who did it. So now we are here in Catania, outside of Sicily, to try and continue our mission to try again,” she added.
“We are watching a systematic starvation of 2 million people. A live-streamed genocide and the world’s silence is deadly. That is why we have to keep trying everything we can, even if the odds are against us.”

“We are watching a systematic starvation of two million people. A live-streamed genocide and the world’s silence is deadly. That is why we have to keep trying everything we can —even if the odds are against us — to try and protest and do everything we can to stand against Israel’s atrocities and war crimes. And to support and stand in solidarity with the people of Palestine.
“Keep your eyes on deck. Continue flooding the streets, organise boycotts and do everything in your power to stand for Palestine.”
The shirt she wore in the video was launched at the end of 2024, and saw Grian Chatten and co. team up with Dublin’s Bohemians FC. The design raised funds for Medical Aid For Palestinians (MAP), and features a Palestinian flag with the words “Saoirse don Phalaistín” (Irish language for ‘Free Palestine’). Visit here to buy yours.
Since the video was shared, some on X/Twitter have taken to the platform to show their surprise at seeing Thunberg wearing the Fontaines shirt. “Greta Thunberg wearing a Fontaines D.C. top in Gaza was not on my 2025 bingo card,” one wrote, while another added: “Greta Thunberg in a Fontaines D.C. shirt? What on earth?”

The Bohemians FC top didn’t mark the first time that Fontaines have made efforts to raise funds for the people of Gaza. Last summer, the band donated their $2,000 (£1,565) prize from a viral music quiz to Doctors Without Borders “for Palestine”. The band later cancelled a scheduled show in Istanbul in solidarity with Palestine, saying that they “must be clear in our convictions”.
Chatten then explained why the group want to use their platform to speak out during an interview with NME – making a nod to the 12″ benefit single Fontaines released with Massive Attack and Young Fathers.
“It becomes incredibly tiring and disenfranchising, not just as a musician but as a young person, to be talking about and raising awareness,” he said. “At some point, you’ve got to do something that feels a bit more tangible, you know?
“It really is the responsibility of the masses, of artists, and anyone with a voice – which is most people nowadays – to do something, say something. Which side are you on?”
Other efforts to raise awareness have come from the band’s Carlos O’Connell, who read ‘Voices For Gaza’ letters of a Palestinian’s war experience, alongside artists such as Brian Eno, former R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe and Bastille’s Dan Smith.
Israel has vehemently rejected allegations of genocide in Gaza.
