Sam Fender surprised fans over the weekend by bringing out both CMAT and Olivia Dean during his Newcastle show. Check out footage and the setlist below.
The show took place last night (June 15) at the singer’s huge show at St James’ Park – the third of the three gigs he had lined up for his hometown of Newcastle this summer.
Kicking off the show, the singer, songwriter and guitarist, opened the set with back-to-back renditions of ‘Getting Started’, ‘Will We Talk?’, ‘Arm’s Length’ and ‘The Borders’, before following on with performances of ‘Howdon Aldi Death Queue’, ‘Crumbling Empire’ and ‘Tyrants’.
It was during the live rendition of ‘Rein Me In’, eight songs into the 17-track setlist, however, that Fender brought out Olivia Dean for a collaborative rendition. Dean has been opening for Fender during his run of live shows, and also joined him on stage during night two of his Newcastle shows for the joint performance of the ‘People Watching’ song.
That wasn’t the only surprise collaboration of the night either, as Fender also brought out his former guitar teacher Phil Martin for a cover of Thin Lizzy’s classic track ‘The Boys Are Back In Town’ – something seen in previous Newcastle shows – and also introduced the Easington Colliery Brass Band for ‘Remember My Name’.
The latter was the first song in the encore and was followed by a performance of ‘Something Heavy’, which saw him joined by his brother Liam and Irish singer-songwriter CMAT, who was another support act lined up for the Newcastle show.
Check out more footage of the third and final homecoming show at St James’ Park below, as well as the full setlist.

Other highlights from across Fender’s recent UK shows have included a huge homage to footballer Dan Burn at night one in Newcastle, following him helping Newcastle win their first major domestic trophy in seven decades this spring with their 2-1 win against Liverpool. As seen in fan footage of the gig, Burn was in attendance for that gig, and got to witness the crowd chanting his name firsthand.
Before heading back to his hometown, Fender played at the 82,500-capacity London Stadium last week as the first live shows of his huge UK summer tour. He was also joined by Olivia Dean for that gig, and used the show to give a passionate pro-Palestine speech.
Later this summer, Fender will play three big outdoor gigs in Manchester, Edinburgh and Belfast, as well as top the bill at Ireland’s Electric Picnic. Find any remaining tickets for Fender’s UK and Ireland headline dates here.
