Robbie Williams has kicked off his ‘BRITPOP’ tour by welcoming The Lottery Winners and Michelle McManus on stage in Edinburgh – see footage below.
The former Take That star is preparing to release his first studio album in almost a decade, also titled ‘BRITPOP’, in the autumn (pre-order here), and he is previewing the record with a string of stadium dates around the UK. The first of those went down at the Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh on Saturday (May 31).
He opened the show with the live debut of his new single ‘Rocket’, released last month and featuring guitars from Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi, before unleashing a 23-track career-spanning set.
In characteristic fashion, the show was a theatrical production, having been introduced with a big-screen video of a deepfake Elvis and the declaration that Robbie – the “King of Entertainment – is the man to save the music industry. For ‘Let Me Entertain You’, he launched himself off a bridge on stage, flying through the air while hanging from his ankles, in a tribute to his 2002 album ‘Escapology’.
In the middle of the show, he also welcomed Greater Manchester indie band The Lottery Winners, who played with him on ‘Let Love Be Your Energy’, ‘Sexed Up’ and ‘Candy’, and 2003 Pop Idol winner Michelle McManus for a version of Take That and Lulu’s ‘Relight My Fire’.

The new album’s cover artwork nods to one of Robbie’s most iconic looks, the red tracksuit worn to Glastonbury Festival in 1995 when he partied with Oasis at the height of the Britpop era.
In another call back to that era, Williams is notably going on tour at the same time as the Gallagher brothers’ return.
Robbie recently spoke to NME at the Ivor Novello Awards, where he picked up the Icon Award. Reflecting on whether ‘BRITPOP’ will recapture the hedonism of the ‘90s, he said: “If hedonism is Jaffa Cake-based or Cadbury’s Fruit And Nut, then I’m in. Everything else I’ve got to park until I die. If I don’t park it, it’ll kill me.”
Elaborating on his guitar-heavy new sound, he continued: “I was playing it safe and I’ve not been driving my own car. I’ve not had my hands on the wheel through second-thinking myself and guessing what people like. I just wanted to do something that I like.”
