Anna Calvi has shared a cover of Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy’s ‘I See A Darkness’, which sees her collaborate with Perfume Genius. Check it out below.

The haunting cover sees the two join forces and explore themes of intimacy beyond romance – celebrating the deep connection that can be found in friendship.

It comes with a video directed by Alexander Brown, which hones in on that same emotion during a night out, and how the two of them are free to have a memorable night without letting strangers interfere with their bond.

“So many songs are about romantic love,” Calvi shared. “But I wanted to highlight the romance of the chosen family, the depth of connection that isn’t tethered to heteronormative ideals. It’s such a powerful song about the yearning for intimacy.

“I love inhabiting other people’s songs. When I sing someone else’s words, I feel like I’m getting closer to myself somehow, because the songs I choose express something I can’t articulate.”

The song marks Calvi’s first new music since she brought her signature sound to the score of the fifth and sixth seasons of Peaky Blinders – whose final episode aired in 2022. Those scores were later released at the start of last year.

As well as joining forces with Perfume Genius, Calvi has also launched a Substack called Carving Silver In Strange Weather. This will soon see her share a variety of unreleased songs and instrumentals, playlists, released and unreleased live performances, and her own thoughts and explorations on artistic obsessions.

You can sign up and check out the first chapter, The Guitar – Depravity and The Divine, here.

So far, Calvi has just one live performance planned – an intimate headline show at London’s EartH Theatre on November 1. This one-off gig is now sold-out, and will see her perform rarities from her back catalogue and joined by special guests throughout the night.

Recently, the singer took part in the Southbank Centre’s concert tribute to David Lynch, and took to the stage in honour of the late filmmaker alongside Jehnny Beth, Sophia Brous, Kirin J. Callinan, Mick Harvey and Conor O’Brien (Villagers).
