aespa enlist Grimes for brand-new remix of ‘Supernova’

K-pop girl group aespa have tapped Canadian musician Grimes for a remix of their hit single ‘Supernova’.

On September 20, aespa and SM Entertainment unveiled their ‘Supernova / Armageddon’ remixes under the agency’s iScream project, through which DJs and producers around the world remix songs by its artists. Leading the project is a new remix of their hit track ‘Supernova’ by Grimes.

In a string of posts on X earlier this week, Grimes shared that K-pop had gotten her into producing music again. “Honestly I prob wouldn’t have started producing music again except that my autistic hyper fixation got hijacked by k pop. Friendship ended w Nietzsche, now Æspa is my friend,” she wrote.

She revealed that she also remixed aespa’s single ‘Armageddon’, but did not submit it to the label. “idk if they want it but I could ask,” she said. “I also have a second supernova remix that’s kinda good but my baby destroyed the computer it was on so it’s unmixable”.

While this marks the first time the two acts have worked together, they previously featured on an episode of Rolling Stone’s Musicians on Musicians interview series, where they discussed their common usage of AI and avatars in their music.

aespa first released ‘Supernova’ in May as the pre-release single to their first studio album ‘Armageddon’. The girl group then released its title track along with the full record later that month.

In a four-star review of ‘Armageddon’, NME’s Rhian Daly praised its more experimental tracks, writing: “when aespa are allowed to run free in the sounds and sonics they’ve made their trademark, they’re nothing short of exquisite.”

In other K-pop news, Korean-American rapper and singer Jessi has announced the establishment of her new independent label UNNI. This comes eight months after she left her former label More Vision, headed by Jay Park.
