The moment took place on Saturday night (November 23) during Vada Vada – a mini festival in Los Angeles hosted and headlined by The Garden.

Though DeMarco wasn’t on the line-up, he made a surprise appearance during the punk duo’s headline set to play their collaborative track, ‘Thy Mission’. The song was released in 2019 following The Garden joining DeMarco on tour, but they’ve rarely performed it live all together.

Clips shared on social media show DeMarco joining Fletcher and Wyatt Shears, alongside a huge, silent joker figure who wandered the stage throughout the performance. Check it out, and some fan reactions, below.

In 2018, The Garden spoke to NME about their ‘vada vada’ philosophy – an idea of total freedom of expression without boundaries or guidelines and the namesake of their festival. “It’s just kind of like an everyday human philosophy,” Fletcher told us. “It’s easy to fall out of the reality of real life, so sometimes when you give yourself a stern look in the mirror you’re able to see things a little clearer.”

Earlier this year, DeMarco made a surprise appearance during Lil Yachty‘s huge Coachella set to play ‘On The Level’ – taken from DeMarco’s 2017 album ‘This Old Dog’ – and ‘Chamber Of Reflection’, shared 10 years ago as part of the ‘Salad Days’ LP.

In an interview with NME, DeMarco explained the recent change in his musical direction. “I mean, with these last couple of releases I’ve probably freed myself in most regards,” he shared. “I almost feel like there was a long time where I was pretending to be something that I wasn’t.”
