TV On The Radio‘s Tunde Adebimpe has announced his debut solo album ‘Thee Black Boltz’ and has shared the reflective single ‘Drop’.
Produced by Jahphet Landis, ‘Drop’ opens with Adebimpe beatboxing and leads into soft synths and a crisp guitar riff. “But will I feel it when I drop? / Restless hours / The ticking of a clock / On my life / And my life’s just a dot / On a timeline / And my soul / Is fading tonight,” the musician asks as he reflects on life.
The track’s accompanying visualiser features line drawings of Adebimpe beatboxing and performing the song with a psychedelic, colourful kaleidoscope background as the lyrics appear on screen.
‘Drop’ is the second single to be released following ‘Magnetic’ which was shared last September. Both songs will be featured on ‘Thee Black Boltz’.
The album was produced by Abebimpe and Wilder Zoby, with the latter serving as executive producer as well. The likes of Abebimpe’s TV On The Radio bandmates Jaleel Bunton and Jahphet Landis also provided additional production and contributions to the album.
According to a press release, ‘Thee Black Boltz’ is a “nod to Adebimpe’s propensity to write and sing about the human condition – in all its forms, under all its stressors, both big and small.” ‘Thee Black Boltz’ is set for release on April 18 via Sub Pop. You can pre-order the album here.
