Alesso has opened up about suffering from tinnitus, saying that he saw it as “a sign to slow down”.
The Swedish DJ and producer (real name Alessandro Lindblad) shared a video update on Instagram yesterday (February 4), in which he explained his absence from social media and recent show cancellations.
“I just wanted to be a little bit transparent on the situation,” he said.
“So basically, two months ago, I woke up with the loudest ringing in my ears. I’m talking about 10 out of 10. I was in complete shock. And it was not after a show. I just woke up, and it was so intense.”
He went on to say that he had experienced some “issues” and mild tinnitus in the past, “but nothing like this”.
“I know it’s super common in the music industry, but yeah. I had a really, really difficult time dealing with this,” Alesso continued. “But the good news is I’m getting better.”
He added: “I took this as a sign to slow down, to prioritise my health, be more careful. I’ve been doing this for 14 years now, and I’ve never taken a break. So I’ve just been kinda focussing on that.”

Alesso then reiterated that he was “doing better”, adding: “I’m really excited about some shows coming up this year […] I will be doing shows but maybe not as many, as you can understand.”
He signed off by warning his followers to “be careful” and “wear ear protection”, before thanking those who had reached out with words of support. “I hope I see you this year,” he concluded. “Stay safe.”
Alesso currently has a run of North American dates scheduled for this year, beginning later this month. He is also scheduled to perform at the Siam Songkran Music Festival in Thailand this spring.
He has previously worked with the likes of Calvin Harris, Katy Perry, Usher, David Guetta and Stray Kids.
Tinnitus can be caused by ear damage or exposure to loud noise, with symptoms including ringing, buzzing and throbbing in one or both ears (via NHS). Other musicians to have suffered from the condition include Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Noel and Liam Gallagher and Nick Cave.
“Mine is actually pretty manageable most of the time, it comes and goes, and only really kicks off when I am playing live music, which now I come to think of it is most of the time,” he explained.
