Lady Gaga has announced a monumental free show to over a million fans at Copacabana Beach in Rio.

Titled ‘Mayhem On The Beach’, the show is set to take place on May 3 and will mark the pop icon’s first show in Brazil since 2012. The landmark free show – which will be held at Copacabana Beach near the Belmond Copacabana Palace Hotel – is open to the public and will work on a first-come, first-served basis.

Gaga will be performing on a custom stage built to bring her creative vision to life. The show will be broadcast live on Multishow and TV Globo, starting at 9pm BRT (1am BST). Her performance also marks the launch of Todo Mundo no Rio, a new initiative created by Bonus Track and presented by Corona to highlight the impact of entertainment in Rio de Janeiro.

The ‘Paparazzi’ hitmaker took to her official Instagram account to share the announcement of the show and wrote: “It’s a great honour to be asked to sing for Rio—for my whole career the fans in Brazil have been part of the lifeblood of the little monsters. I’ve been dying to come perform for you for years and was heartbroken when I had to cancel years ago because I was hospitalised.

“Your understanding that I needed that time to heal meant the world to me. I am now coming back and I feel better than ever and am working so hard to make sure this show is one you will never forget. Get ready for MAYHEM on the beach.”

The show will be in support of Gaga’s highly anticipated seventh album ‘Mayhem’ which is set for release on March 7 and is available for pre-order here. It follows on from 2020’s ‘Chromatica’ and her ‘Harlequin’ companion record (2024).

As for the build to ‘Mayhem’, Gaga has released three singles so far: ‘Die With A Smile’ with Bruno Mars‘Disease’ and ‘Abracadabra’. Yesterday, she revealed the album’s full collection of songs, which will include a feature from DJ and producer Gesaffelstein – check out the album’s full tracklist here.

Last year, Madonna took over the same venue in Brazil and performed a free show which marked the largest show of her career to 1.6million people. According to Reuters, many attendees had waited for hours or even days to secure a good spot, while others watched from boats or beachfront apartments.

Just like Gaga, Madonna’s concert at Copacabana was her first show in Brazil since 2012.  The venue had also previously played host to huge shows from the likes of The Rolling Stones in 2006, while Rod Stewart broke the world record for the most-attended concert of all time when he performed there in front of 4.2million people in 1994.

In other news, Gaga is set to pull double duty on Saturday Night Live (SNL) they day after ‘Mayhem’s launch, where she will host the long-running sketch show and perform as a musical guest.

She has also recently confirmed that the long-awaited sequel to her hit 2009 song ‘Telephone’ will happen.
