Fans hit out at Will Smith for “inappropriate” on-stage kiss with India Martinez

Will Smith has faced criticism for kissing singer India Martinez during a live performance at the Premio Lo Nuestro Awards 2025.

The rapper/actor and the Spanish flamenco/pop artist delivered a rendition of their joint single, ‘First Love’ at this year’s edition of the event – which honours the best of Latin music.

At one point in the song, Smith appeared to lean in for a kiss before Martínez rejected him and walked away to continue the performance. Later, it looked like she went in for a kiss with Smith herself.

Viewers have since been sharing their thoughts on the performance, with many commenting on Smith’s attempt to kiss Martinez – despite this seemingly being a part of the choreography.

“This is the worst,” wrote one user on social media (via The Independent). Another said: “Inappropriate, even if it is ‘entertainment’.”

Others questioned how Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett-Smith would react. “I was waiting for Jada to come out from left stage and smack the shit outta her for kissing her man,” a third person commented.

In 2023, Jada revealed that she had been secretly separated from Will since 2016. The former couple are not yet officially divorced, however. Over the years, the pair’s marriage has made headlines due to rumours of infidelity and claims they had an open marriage.

Elsewhere, some viewers of last week’s Latin awards show suggested that Smith’s attempt to kiss Martinez looked to be a planned stunt rather than a sincere romantic gesture or awkward moment.

“If you actually look, you can tell the attempt was a joke,” one said. “They never actually kissed. The 2nd attempt when she came back still no kiss.”

Jada and Will have been married since 1997. The couple share two children, Jaden and Willow, while Will also has a son, Trey, from his previous marriage to Sheree Zampino.

Earlier this month, Smith made his first awards show appearance since the infamous ‘slapgate’ incident at the 2022 Oscars. But his presence at the 2025 Grammys was met with hostility from some viewers.

In 2022, Will walked onto the stage at that year’s Oscars and slapped host Chris Rock for making a joke about Jada. Afterwards, Will returned to his seat and repeatedly yelled at Rock: “Keep my wife’s name out your fucking mouth!”

Will subsequently resigned from the Academy, which also banned him from attending the ceremony for 10 years. Additionally, the rapper and actor posted an apology video.

Will Smith’s song ‘First Love’ with Martinez is set to appear on his upcoming new album ‘Based On A True Story’ – his first album in 20 years, following on from 2005’s ‘Lost And Found’.

The new LP will also feature the previously released singles ‘Beautiful Scars’ with Big Sean, ‘You Can Make It’, ‘Work Of Art’ (featuring his son Jaden and Russ) and ‘Tantrum’ with Joyner Lucas.
