G-Dragon‘s single ‘Home Sweet Home’ was beamed to space by South Korean scientists in what’s been called the world’s “first space sound transmission”.
Yonhap News Agency reported today (April 10) that a group of scientists from South Korea have beamed G-Dragon’s 2024 single ‘Home Sweet Home’, which also featured Big Bang bandmates Daesung and Taeyang, and an image of his iris to space.
The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, or KAIST, announced the success of the project as performed by contemporary artist and associate professor Lee Jin-joon in collaboration with G-Dragon. The institute called it the world’s “first space sound transmission” that “aimed to send a musical message from the artist into outer space”.
Dr Lee used generative artificial intelligence (AI) to create an artwork called ‘Iris’, using an image of the Big Bang rapper’s eye. Its audio component contained a sound clip made using the historic Bell of King Seongdeok along with ‘Home Sweet Home’, lifted from his recent solo comeback album ‘Übermensch’.
“The iris is a symbol reflecting inner emotions and identity, often referred to as the “mirror of the soul.” Through this work, I aimed to depict the “infinite universe seen through the inner self of humanity” by following G-Dragon’s perspective,” Lee said of the project.
G-Dragon also added his sentiments about the project, saying it felt “surreal” that “one of my cherished songs is being sent into space”. “It’s already amazing that the world can share music through the advancement of science,” he said. “I’m very thrilled, and I hope [‘Home Sweet Home’] has “found its home properly.”
G-Dragon recently kicked off his 2025 ‘Übermensch’ world tour, with shows in South Korea’s Goyang Stadium on March 29 and 30. The K-pop idol will next be bringing his tour to Japan, Malaysia, China and more.
