Depeche Mode have shared details of a new epic live movie titled M. Find out the details below.

The new film features cinematic footage of their recent live shows in Mexico City, held as part of the extensive ‘Memento Mori’ tour that spanned between 2023 and 2024.

Set to arrive in theatres later this year, the feature-length film will incorporate interstitials and archival footage from the shows in the capital, where Dave Gahan and co. played to nearly 200,000 Mexican fans. It was conceptualised and directed by award-winning filmmaker Fernando Frias, and looks to take the audience on a “profound musical journey”.

“Through Frias’ creative lens, the cinematic experience weaves footage from the three sold-out shows at Mexico City’s Foro Sol Stadium to explore the parallels between the themes on Depeche Mode’s latest album ‘Memento Mori’ and the deep connection to death and mortality in Mexican culture,” reads a new description. The film also aims to hold up a mirror to the band’s global influence, as well as the powerful connection they have maintained with fans over the years.

For Frias, the project comes following his work on the award-winning film I’m No Longer Here, which cleared up at Mexico’s prestigious Ariel Academy Awards and took home 10 wins. It also follows on from his latest film, I Don’t Expect Anyone to Believe Me, which was released in 2023 to critical acclaim.

More details about the Depeche Mode film are set to be shared at a later date, including information about when it should arrive in theatres.

As aforementioned, the three Mexico City shows took place as part of the band’s ‘Memento Mori’ tour, which spanned across 2023 and 2024, and celebrated the release of their highly anticipated 15th studio album of the same name.

The record marked the first since the tragic passing of synth player and founding member Andy Fletcher, who died back in May 2022 aged just 60.

During the tour, the band played to more than 3million fans globally as they embarked on 112 shows around the world.

In the summer of 2023, NME was in attendance for their massive show at Twickenham Stadium in London, and gave the set a glowing four-star review. “The famously fractious tensions in the band seem to have given way to fraternity, never more heartwarming than during the pally wedding dancing between members that closes the monolithic ‘Enjoy The Silence’, or the tender hug they share after Gahan and Gore’s duet on ‘Waiting For The Night’,” it read.

“What ultimately hits the hardest is the generosity of bangers and the graceful energy they arrive with. Look at that setlist […] Come on. We’re in sexy goth heaven,” the review continued. “You feel spoiled as an audience member, and we’d be lucky if this good feeling and compulsion of Depeche Mode’s current purple streak continues for years to come.”

Ahead of the tour, Dave Gahan and Martin Gore spoke candidly to NME about what it was like adjusting to life without their bandmate, and explained how they wanted to celebrate his unmistakable impact in ‘Memento Mori’.

“It’s fucking hard work to keep a band going for that long, you realise how it’s got to be losing an anchor. Fletch was part of what we knew as Depeche Mode for the last 40 years,” Gahan said.

“Losing Fletch made that feeling more real. Everything will come to an end. I don’t know when that is. After Fletch passed and we had to continue I said, ‘Try to enjoy what you’ve got to do here and do the best you can’. You really don’t know if you’re going to be doing it again.”

Last year, the iconic frontman caught up with NME again to discuss his show celebrating the life of Mark Lanegan, as well as share what is on the cards for Depeche Mode.

“To be honest it’s taken me quite a while just to recover after the tour… It was fantastic and ended up being more than what Martin and I could have imagined in many ways,” he said. “I’ve just spent the last five months since I got home just trying to get back into my regular life of family, friends, a little bit of writing here and there, but to be honest I’m not that inspired by anything.”

“I actually did ask Martin if he’d been writing and he was like, ‘Nah!’ That’s normal – especially when you’ve worked intensely for a couple of years,” he added. “It takes a while. Wait and see. I wouldn’t rule out getting together at some point, but it’s not on the cards at this point.”
