Green Day fans have taken to social media to criticise Charli XCX after she was seen sporting a “Miss should be headliner” sash at a Coachella afterparty.

On Saturday (April 12), Charli’s 7pm set on the Main Stage fell before Green Day’s headline slot, and saw her bring out a handful of the artists featured on the ‘Brat‘ remix album, ‘Brat and it’s completely different but also still brat‘.

The ‘Apple’ singer was joined by Troye SivanBillie Eilish and Lorde, who came out to perform their ‘Girl, so confusing’ remix, with Charli seemingly passing the torch and heralding “Lorde summer 2025”.

Following on from her set, Green Day’s headline performance saw them alter a ‘Jesus of Suburbia’ lyric to reference the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict, with frontman Billie Joe Armstrong singing, “Runnin’ away from pain like the kids from Palestine/Tales from another broken home,” replacing the original line, “Runnin’ away from pain when you’ve been victimised.”

Charli was later pictured at an afterparty wearing a sash that read: “Miss should be headliner”. However, this soon drew some backlash from Green Day fans, with some deeming it insensitive given punk icons using their set to address the atrocities in Palestine and take aim at Donald Trump.

It’s not the first time the band have updated their songs to reflect the current political climate. In 2016, they gave ‘Holiday’ a lyric change to attack “white supremacist” then-Republic candidate Donald Trump.

Then, on a performance on New Year’s Eve of 2023, they made headlines for altering the lyrics to the iconic 2004 track ‘American Idiot’, replacing the original line “I’m not a part of a redneck agenda” with “I’m not a part of the MAGA agenda”.

“Green day making a political statement about shit that actually matters > pop girlies singing about coke,” wrote one unimpressed fan, with more weighing in about the size of their respective audiences. “Charli xcx letting hype get to her head,” added one X/Twitter user. “Green Day used their Coachella headliner slot to speak up for good. They are still bigger than her.”

Elsewhere over weekend, Lady Gaga performed a theatrical five-act set, and A. G. Cook brought out Danny Brown, performing a host of tracks before remixing Charli’s ‘Party 4 U’.

Billie Joe Armstrong also joined The Go-Go‘s on stage for a performance of their 1984 hit single ‘Head Over Heels’, and there was controversy during Kneecap‘s set after they led an anti-Margaret Thatcher chant, with fans reporting the online stream had cut out shortly after.

YouTube will be livestreaming the festival via the Coachella YouTube channel. Last year’s edition of the festival was headlined by Lana Del Rey, Doja Cat and Tyler, The Creator and also saw the return of No Doubt and more.
