M83 announces new label Other Suns and ‘A Necessary Escape’ soundtrack

M83‘s Anthony Gonzalez has created a new label, Other Suns, on which he is releasing the soundtrack ‘A Necessary Escape’.

The label’s first release is Gonzalez’s own soundtrack to the upcoming film Dakar: Race Against The Desert. Both film and soundtrack will be released on May 9.

A synopsis of the film reads: “8,549 kilometers. 16 days. 383 drivers. For 45 years the Dakar rally has pushed human limits, earning its place as the toughest race in motorsports. Spanning 9,000 kilometers over 14 days, competitors from 60+ countries race through uncharted deserts. This film weaves a story of determination as racers brave the ultimate off-road motorsport test, following legends like Sébastien Loeb, and rising stars like Mason Klein, capturing a thrilling battle against the elements, each other, and the unyielding Dakar legacy.”

Other suns will not just be M83’s new home, but a platform for new artists. Gonzalez has signed Kaela, who will release her debut album ‘Supraliminal’ on May 16, and Villeneuve, who will release new album ‘Soul Tuning’ on May 30.

According to a press release, the label “is passionate about the tangible, long lasting presence of vinyl and what it stands for in a hyper transitory world.”

Previously, M83 released the album ‘Fantasy’ in 2023. In a three-star review, NME wrote: “While he may have made a deliberate turn away from commercialism, the songs on this latest M83 album remain sugary, dreamlike and entirely welcoming. Inspired by the ‘80s shoegaze sounds he grew up on and the immersive worlds of film soundtracks and video game music, ‘Fantasy’ is a huge, fizzing world of sound that’s designed to feel as awe-inspiring as possible.”

It added: “Despite Gonzalez’s attempts to pull away from success, his status as a cult hero looks secure. His penchant for an earworm – intentional or not – remains undeniable.”
