Katy Perry has kicked off her ‘Lifetimes’ tour, although it seems some fans are not too impressed with the level of choreography.

The live shows kicked off in Mexico City on Wednesday night (April 23) – one week after the pop star divided fans with her 11minute venture into space.

Taking place at the Arena CDMX, the live show came in celebration of Perry’s comeback album ‘143’, and saw her break out hits from across her career. However, some footage of the live set has been going viral for the wrong reasons it seems, as fans have begun making light of the choreography.

According to fan footage from the night, it seems that the show is based around a virtual reality concept, and sees Perry as a half-human half-machine, fighting off a looming AI enemy called ‘The Mainframe’.

The performances of each song show the pop star tackling the threat in different ways, and the narration at the start of the show reportedly explains that she is trying to defeat it as it has stolen the world’s butterflies and turned dogs against humans (via Consequence).

Not all fans were impressed with the choreographed elements of the show though, with some of the more lacklustre moments going viral across social media.

In the rendition of ‘E.T.’ for instance, Perry is seen holding a red, luminous weapon – similar to that of Star Wars’ Darth Maul – and knocking away enemies, before having a tug-of-war moment with it.

In another, she is seen doing some pretty intense dance moves on the spot, before dropping to the floor and singing ‘Part Of Me’.

“Doing so much but nothing at the same time,” one viewer quipped at the first clip, while another added: “What in the Star Wars??”

“It seemed so lifeless with such apathy, for opening night…she seems so over it already,” one less-impressed viewer wrote, while someone else shared: “It looks like the behind-the-scenes video before they add the CGI”.

Others, however, were more accepting of the choreography. “This woman literally fly around the arena almost the entire show, make A LOT of stunts and have a very hard dance during the second ACT Of the show but yeah… let’s gonna take the goofy dance that she had for 1 min and make fun about it,” a fan on X wrote.

Later in the year, Katy Perry will hit the UK and Europe – see the full list of dates and get tickets here.

The tour’s commencement follows the singer announcing earlier this week the cancellation of two shows in Guadalajara in May as the venue they were meant to take place in will not be constructed in time. The tour also comes shortly after her highly criticised space flight earlier in the month. Perry was one member of the first all-female space mission in history.

During their voyage, Perry sang Louis Armstrong’s ‘What A Wonderful World’ and revealed the setlist for her upcoming ‘Lifetimes’ tour. She was later seen holding a daisy to the sky and kissing the ground upon returning from space.

The trip has sparked memes and controversy, and she has also garnered criticism from other celebrities for taking the space flight. Actor Olivia Munn, for example, branded Perry “gluttonous”, Emily Ratajkowski said she was similarly “disgusted” by the space flight and Lily Allen called the mission “out of touch”, saying there was “no fucking reason” for it.

As for Perry’s new album, NME gave the record a two-star review  and described it as “a serviceable but slightly dull collection on which Perry struggles to relocate her old sense of fun”.
