Nine Inch Nails’ longtime guitarist Robin Finck has released a new horror video game Sleep Awake alongside a terrifying soundtrack.
Co-created by Finck alongside Cory Davis, Sleep Awake is a futuristic first-person psychological horror game. Taking place in the last known city of Earth, humans are hunted by The HUSH which makes people disappear in their sleep. To survive, people undertake reckless experiments to keep awake.
“Katja must navigate depraved death cults, otherworldly forces, and the ever-present horror of The HUSH, to save herself and those who rely upon her,” explains the game’s description.
Sleep Awake is out now on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S via Blumhouse Games.
Finck’s soundtrack for Sleep Awake has also been released. According to a press release, the music matches the visceral journey of Katja as she navigates an ever-crumbling reality. “Blending brooding guitar motifs, immersive synth passages and evolving rhythmic pulses, the soundtrack is teeming with ominous tension and hypnotic transcendence, capturing the game’s emotional and existential depths and stylistic inventiveness.”
“Assembling the album was a monumental task for me,” Finck said in a statement. “My greatest creative challenge here was to create a listening experience that lives outside the gameplay but still retains a vibe and flow of traveling through storied experiences.”
“I’ve been scratching into every dark corner of audio without the support of the narrative and visual design. Sometimes I’d feel like I’m at the bottom of a well, but then I’m able to re-approach, re-arrange, and re-build and end up with something wholly new and exciting, inspired by parts, but now living as some new Frankenstein that seems to really be alive and wanting to leap off the table. Both the gameplay audio and the album audio grew up under the same roof, but this album experience has packed its bags and is leaving home for the great unknown.”
The 25-track album is available to stream here.
Earlier this year, Jack White praised Nine Inch Nails’ ‘Peel It Back Tour’ after seeing the band live. “I was enthralled to attend the NIN show in Nashville yesterday with family and friends, not only for the intense and beautiful music but the best lighting that I’ve ever seen in a show,” he wrote on social media, before calling the gig “inspiring”.
In other news, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 fans have been left “heartbroken” after tickets for the long-awaited concert series sold out in a matter of minutes.
