NME’s latest star of The Cover, Heartworms, has compiled an exclusive playlist to accompany the story’s launch – check it out below.
The South London artist is on this year’s first edition (January 6) of The Cover, a weekly manifestation of NME’s commitment to supporting emerging talent across the globe. Every week, a rising artist will feature on The Cover – you can read the profile of Heartworms here, written by Alex Rigotti and featuring photography by Jamie Waters.
To accompany The Cover, Heartworms has made an exclusive playlist for NME of songs that give her ‘Sanctuary’. The collection includes tracks by the likes of John Cale, Patti Smith, Massive Attack, PJ Harvey and more. Listen to the full playlist on Spotify below and on Apple Music.
For this week’s Cover, Heartworms – whose debut album ‘Glutton For Punishment’, especially the single ‘Warplane’, is influenced by military history – takes NME around the Royal Air Force Museum, where she volunteers. Explaining her long-running fascination with military history and imagery, she says: “It’s easy to make [war] a reality when you’re around these things because you’re not hiding from it. You become more aware of it every day.”
The artist – real name Jojo Orme – also talks to NME about the conflict that marked her formative years, and how she might even need it to go through life. “I’m so used to it growing up,” Orme explains. “My mum and I, it’s constant conflicts and walking on eggshells. It brought out a lot of creativity and escape.”
