Strange Basin #5 with the Zombie
Trace Cyrus, the brother of Miley Cyrus and son of Billy Ray Cyrus, has hit out at Katy Perry in a new video, and claimed that she and her team copied his sister.
The comments were made in a new video, which Trace shared on his official Instagram page over the weekend. In the clip, he took aim at the ‘Roar’ singer following her recent trip to space – which proved controversial – as well as for the decisions made in her music career.
“I first knew Katy Perry and her team were lame as fuck when her career was first dying,” he began. “They were like, ‘Hmm, what can we do? What worked for Miley? She cut her hair off, and it broke the internet, and everybody freaked out and she bleached it blonde. We should do that with you, Katy.’”
“Katy was like, ‘Yeah, yeah, should we do it like, slightly different?’, [and they said] ‘No, we’re gonna do it exactly the same.’” he said, before claiming that Perry’s alleged attempts to “copy” Miley Cyrus went beyond physical appearances and into the direction of her music.
He added that the team allegedly saw Miley making a switch towards the hip-hop genre, joining forces with the likes of Wiz Khalifa, Juicy J, Mike Will Made-It and more, and reckoned Perry’s team told her: “We’re gonna get you in with the hottest group, the Migos. You’re gonna do exactly what the fuck Miley did and blow up.’”
“Guess what? It didn’t fucking work. And then they just tried some EDM song or some shit because EDM is hot… and that didn’t fucking work,” he added. “‘Now we’re gonna send your ass to space’… Didn’t fucking work. It’s not working. It’s backfiring. Stop.”
Katy Perry and her team have yet to publicly respond to the comments. Check out the video below.
Plans for the all-women mission for a spring launch were shared earlier this year by Blue Origin – the aerospace company founded by Jeff Bezos. Perry was announced as one of the participants, alongside former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, film producer Kerianne Flynn, Gayle King, and Bezos’ fiancée Lauren Sánchez.
Taking place last week, the journey took the six participants over 100km (62 miles) above Earth, crossed the internationally recognised boundary of space, and gave them a few moments of weightlessness (as per BBC News). It lasted around 11minutes.
The short trip into space hasn’t only sparked backlash from Trace Cyrus in recent days. It has also seen widespread criticism from other famous faces and numerous social media users.
Among those were actor Olivia Munn, who branded Perry “gluttonous”, Emily Ratajkowski who said she was “disgusted” by the space flight and Lily Allen who called the mission “out of touch”, saying there was “no fucking reason” for it.
Fast food chain Wendy’s also weighed in on social media, jokingly asking if they could “send Katy Perry back to space”, and then went on to double down on the criticism across X/Twitter.
Martha Stewart then drew attention to how she had experienced zero gravity before, and made a tongue-in-cheek jab towards one of Perry’s songs.
Following the widespread criticism, Gayle King has addressed the negative comments and defended the decision to team up with Bezos. “I’ve certainly read some of the things online, coming from people that I know, that I like, that I consider friends. This is what I would say to that: space is not an ‘either/or’, it’s a ‘both/and’, and because you do something in space, doesn’t mean you’re taking anything away from Earth,” she said.
The comments from Trace Cyrus about Katy Perry aren’t the first to get people talking in 2025. Earlier this year, he also turned heads for his comments about his father’s disastrous set at the Donald Trump presidential inauguration.
“Sadly, the man that I wanted so desperately to be just like I barely recognise now. It seems this world has beaten you down and it’s become obvious to everyone but you,” he wrote.
“I don’t know what you’re struggling with exactly, but I think I have a pretty good idea, and I’d love to help you if you would open up and receive the help. You know how to reach me. Till that day comes I will continue to pray for you.”
Billy Ray Cyrus would later respond to the concerned plea shared by his son, and said that he hopes his family can begin to “heal”.
