Wu Lyf have officially released a new single called ‘A New Life Is Coming’ – their first new music in over a decade. Check it out below.
The cult indie band first shared the single yesterday (April 2) with a subtle update on their website. Now, it has officially been released and is available to stream on Bandcamp.
It is titled ‘A New Life Is Coming’, and marks their first new music since they split in 2012, with their final track being ‘Triumph’. Running across six minutes, the song begins with a blend of ethereal instrumentation, which gradually develops until Tom McLung comes in with his soothing vocal melody.
“Ordinary people, Holding their breath/Taking their time, running out of air.” he sings in a sombre tone, as the song gradually builds towards a huge ‘00s-inspired indie chorus. Check it out below.
“Wu Lyf was always better left unspoken. Experienced rather than discussed. Words killed it. You just had to feel it,” the band said in a new press release. “Twelve years after the fire burnt out, life had pulled us apart. We all had walked our separate paths trying to escape the shadow cast by the brief spectacle of our youth.”
“Then something broke. Or healed,” they added. “We set up camp in the loft of a friend’s bookshop behind unfamiliar instruments. Familiar emotions, and we began to play. Tentative at first but with open hearts and minds, seeking new forms unchained from what had been before.
“Old friends with new scars, trying not to aggravate the wounds of yesterday. We are all surprised by the big music that still plays itself through us. An unexpected gift after the longest exile. A gleaming fragment of then, magnified by who we are now. Raw and ecstatic, the fire transfigured,” the statement continued, as the members questioned what will come next.
“What it will become we do not know. You do not dig up the seed to see if grows, you wait. You trust you know the tree by its fruits… Our hands know what our minds forgot. This is something that was always there, waiting for us to remember.”
The comeback comes after Ellery Roberts and co got fans talking earlier this year by dropping suggestions that Wu Lyf had reformed. Initially, one fan on Reddit claimed to have received a postcard from the group, which contained a link leading them to a mysterious clock counting down to April 2.
More recent hints came as the band made two posts on Instagram, sharing both a black-and-white teaser of a jukebox in Manchester, as well as sandwich boards that had their logo on across the city.
Further speculation came when it was shared in February that Lost In Heaven – the group that Ellery Roberts formed after Wu Lyf split in 2012 – were disbanding. They announced their time as a band was coming to an end with the farewell single ‘Creation Song’.
As well as the new song, the band have also announced live shows in Manchester, as well as a handful of European festival dates. The former includes three back-to-back nights at The Kings Arms in Salford later this month, while the latter includes stops in Belgium, The Netherlands, France, Germany and Italy.

The indie band formed in 2008, with their name standing for World Unite Lucifer Youth Foundation. They shared their debut album ‘Go Tell Fire To The Mountain’ in June 2011 and went on to gather a cult following.
In 2012, they started hinting at new material before deciding to call it quits. They confirmed the news while on stage at the Manchester HMV Ritz venue, with the frontman telling the crowd “Goodbye forever”.
As well as Roberts going on to form Lost In Heaven, other members Evans Kati, Tom McClung and Joe Manning went on to make music under the name Los Porcos, along with three members of the band FAMY.
“We all knew it wasn’t working,” drummer Joe Manning told NME in April 2013, discussing the split. “There’s no one explanation for it. There’s a million reasons that don’t amount to much more than it just didn’t work. No-one is trying to cover anything up. If it doesn’t work it’s going to break eventually.”
Alongside the new music and upcoming shows, Wu Lyf have also restarted their Lucifer Youth Foundation subscription service and suggested that more live dates will be announced soon.
