Fountains Of Wayne have played their first show in 12 years and their first since the death of bassist Adam Schlesinger – watch below.

Schlesinger, a founding member of the band, who also gained fame as an Emmy-winning film and TV composer, passed away in 2020 at the age of 52 from complications related to COVID-19.

In February, the band announced they would be returning to the stage for a string of new shows, with Eve 6’s Max Collins filling in for Schlesinger on bass. The first of those shows went down in the Mizner Park Amphitheater in Boca Raton, Florida on Saturday (May 24), with Fountains Of Wayne opening for Weezer.

They played a 15-song set comprised entirely of music from their first three albums, ‘Fountains Of Wayne’ (1996), ‘Utopia Parkway’ (1999) and ‘Welcome Interstate Managers’ (2003). It was their first full live set since the conclusion of their Fall Tour in October 2013.

Fountains Of Wayne now head to Japan to play two dates at the Mano-Mugen Festival in Yokohama on May 31 and June 1, followed by an appearance at Summerfest in Milwaukee on July 4 and Oceans Calling in Maryland on September 26.

Following his passing, Schlesinger received tributes from various friends and colleagues such as Tom Hanks, who wrote, directed and starred in 1996’s That Thing You Do!, for which Schlesinger wrote the acclaimed signature title track, which charted all around the world.

Green Day‘s Billie Joe Armstrong also paid tribute to Schlesinger by covering ‘That Thing You Do’ as part of his No Fun Mondays series of quarantine sessions in 2020.

In 2023, Lauren Mayberry and Matthew Koma also teamed up for a cover of ‘That Thing You Do’  during Mayberry’s gig at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, New York.
