Girl In Red tackles “addiction, ED and depression that almost killed me” on beautiful new song ‘Hemingway’

Girl In Red has released her new song ‘Hemingway’, tackling “addiction, ED and depression that almost killed me”.

The Norwegian singer released the vulnerable single ‘Confession‘ back in February, and teased at the time that more new music would be coming soon.

Now, Girl In Red (real name Marie Ulven) has dropped her latest single, ‘Hemingway’. Set against strummed acoustic guitars, the song takes its title from the intimate, raw chorus: “You say ‘God damn, baby, you drink like Hemingway / But your writing’s no good and your songs all sound the same’”.

In an emotional Instagram post, Ulven explained the backstory behind the sound, writing: “Last year i ended up in a really bad place with addiction, ED and depression that almost killed me.” She went on to say that ‘Hemingway’ “tells a part of that story”, adding: “Thank you for all the love you have been sending my way since i opened up about all of this”.

Ulven then called ‘Hemingway’ her “favourite song so far”

Girl In Red will play a number of festivals this summer, including Rock Werchter and headlining Øya festival in her native Norway. She’ll also open for Olivia Rodrigo at her BST Hyde Park show in London this June, and Ulven will then go on to play various dates in Mexico and South America.

Ulven is also soon to make her feature-length acting debut in the forthcoming film Low Expectations. She’ll play lead character Maja – a 29-year-old artist who finds herself at breaking point following years of intense success.

The new movie is being produced by Maipo Film in Norway, in collaboration with Snowglobe in Denmark. It’ll serve as the first feature from Norwegian director Eivind Landsvik.

We last spoke to Ulven in 2024, where she told us about her first ever featured guest, Sabrina Carpenter. “So when I was making that song, I did that last part myself and it just wasn’t right,” she told us. “I did that whole intro where I introduced myself, but I really felt like creatively and sonically, I needed another voice here.

“I really admire Sabrina’s voice. I really admire her artistry. I feel like she’s levelling up her stuff too, and she’s really finding her voice. So yeah, I felt like it was cool. Also, it’s unexpected, because we are operating in two different realms. I might be a little bit more indie, and she’s a little bit more pop – [an] American sweetheart, maybe. But I also think her voice on a production like that is so fucking sick. I really hope that she’s going to do something a little bit more like that.”
