Miley Cyrus has revealed that Disney prevented her from performing Hannah Montana songs after the show ended in 2011.
The Disney Channel TV series, which first aired in 2006, starred Cyrus as a pop singer who hid her true identity from fans so she could live a normal life.
During its five-year lifespan, Cyrus released five Hannah Montana soundtrack albums, one live record and two remix albums. She also released three solo albums on Disney’s Hollywood record label before switching to RCA and releasing her seminal album ‘Bangerz’ in 2013.
Now, she’s shared that Disney prohibited her from performing songs from her Hannah Montana era. “It’s not like I wanted to,” she explained in a new interview with The Ringer podcast. “Performing ‘The Best of Both Worlds’ between ‘We Can’t Stop’ and ‘Wrecking Ball’ wouldn’t have really made sense.”
However, she added that although she didn’t want to sing songs from her time at Disney, she had mixed feelings on an outright ban. “It was still sad knowing those songs have my voice, my face, and I wasn’t allowed to sing them,” she said.
Last year, Cyrus was inducted as the youngest ever Disney Legend, where she apologised to Mickey Mouse: “I definitely wasn’t created in a lab, and if I was, there must’ve been a bug in the system which caused me to malfunction somewhere between the years of 2013 and ’16,” she said at the time. “Sorry, Mickey.”
Since then, she’s revealed, Disney have permitted her to sing those songs again. “After being inducted as a Disney Legend, I was given permission to perform those songs in the future, which is pretty cool,” she said.
Cyrus recently released her latest album ‘Something Beautiful’. In a four-star review, NME said the project “does feel like a fully realised artistic statement”, adding: “This post-genre pop star has pulled off another pretty big swing.”
The record is accompanied by the Something Beautiful film, which will be screened in cinemas for one night only later this month. It was directed by Cyrus, Jacob Bixenman and Brendan Walter.
Cyrus recently revealed that fellow Disney Legend Harrison Ford had talked her out of “performing in the forest” to promote the album.
In other news, the singer has told fans that her next LP will be “extremely experimental”. Meanwhile, fans have been speculating that Cyrus makes a dig at Dua Lipa on her new track ‘Every Girl You’ve Ever Loved’.
