The New York Yankees will stop playing Frank Sinatra’s version of ‘Theme from New York, New York’ when they lose a game, and save the track only for wins.
The baseball team had previously played the track after both wins and losses, according to CBS Sports, however, this is changing. Yankees players stated they were growing tired of hearing the track after losses, which was originally from the Martin Scorsese musical film New York, New York but was covered by Sinatra two years later.
Following a 4-0 spring training loss to the Detroit Tigers at George M. Steinbrenner Field on Sunday (February 23), the Yankees chose to play Sinatra’s iconic song “That’s Life,” which was recorded in 1966. ‘New York, New York’ did not get played.
“We will be rotating through a number of different songs after a Yankees loss this year, none of them will be ‘New York New York,’” a Yankees spokesperson told the New York Times. There will not be a specific Yankees loss song, the spokesperson added.
‘New York, New York’ was originally played following Yankees wins after former club owner George Steinbrenner discovered Sinatra’s version from his time as a DJ at Le Club in Manhattan. The baseball team then went on to use both Sinatra and Liza Minnelli versions of the iconic musical song.
In other Frank Sinatra-related news, last year Variety reported that Martin Scorsese is allegedly set to work on a Sinatra biopic with longtime collaborator Leonardo DiCaprio.
The film has already attracted interest from major studios. Apple, who funded the $215million budget Killers Of The Flower Moon, had expressed interest but Sony is said to be the frontrunner for the project.
