Matt Helders of Arctic Monkeys has been sharing new updates with fans, suggesting that new solo material could be on the way.
The Arctic Monkeys drummer and backing vocalist has been sharing new footage across his social media over the past couple of days, showing that he is in the studio and underway with writing some new material.
The first teaser arrived two days ago, when Helders shared a brief clip of himself in the studio along with the caption: “No.01”. It showed a compilation of clips of him in the studio, all in distinctive low quality and showing brief snippets of electronic music. The material seems to have a laid-back, ‘90s feel to it, and gradually builds up as the video progresses.
Yesterday (April 13), another clip was shared. It has the same low-quality footage as the predecessor and also shows Helders in his studio. Coming with the caption ‘No.02’, it contained audio of what seems to be a different track, which was more upbeat than the first one.
This morning (14), another clip has been shared, following the same format as the two prior clips, although starting with footage of the musician holding up a label to the camera which reads “No.03”. The audio in this clip has a glassy, almost-playful feel, and is in keeping with the electronic genre laid out in the earlier videos. Check out all three posts below.
If the new teasers do eventually amount to a full-on solo album from Helders, it will follow on from the DJ mix album he shared back in 2008. That record marked the 21st instalment in the Late Night Tales series, and saw the AM member put his own spin on tracks from The Black Keys, The Stooges, Goblin, Mos Def and more.
Hints about a solo album have been around since 2018, when he said in an interview that he was underway with work for a new LP and determined to make “a lot” of material to justify a full album.
“I feel like I’ve got to do a certain amount before it’s deserved in a way. I don’t want to do it too soon and then regret it, like ‘Oh, I shouldn’t have made that kind of record’,” he said. “I want to make a lot of music and then like, ‘Oh, that’s the thing I like about this’.”
He continued: “I think I’m getting to a point now in which the style has developed and what I want to do is more clear to me than it was before. ”
Later that year, he went on to share more hints about the record, describing the music he’s been working on as “like a John Carpenter kind of thing”.
“There isn’t really a goal for what it will be yet. I’m just trying to drop in the tools in case, whether it’s a score or a record or what,” he added. “I’m just enjoying it as a hobby and, when that leads to something, I think that feels a bit better for me when it’s, like, just something I wanted to do and have interest in.”
Aside from that and his work with Arctic Monkeys, Helders has also been a member of Iggy Pop’s Post Pop Depression band, where he performed with Queens Of The Stone Age’s Josh Homme and Dean Fertita.
He has also embarked on various other projects away from AM over the years too – including making remixes of tracks from The Hives, Duran Duran, Paul Weller and Roots Manuva, and collaborations with the likes of Lady Gaga, Toddla T, and The Last Shadow Puppets.
While that full-blown solo album hasn’t yet materialised, the following year did see Helders join up with Milburn frontman Joe Carnall for a retro-futuristic pop record called ‘Good Cop Bad Cop’. Shared in 2019, the record was given a three-star review from NME, and described as “quite the evolved beast from their scratchy garage rock beginnings.”
In 2021, Helders remixed She Drew The Gun‘s ‘Behave Myself’, and in 2023 he joined up with Albert Hammond Jr as part of the latter’s solo album ‘Melodies On Hiatus’.
Aside from music, the artist has also taken an interest in photography, and has even been responsible for the cover artwork for Arctic Monkey’s latest album, ‘The Car’. In an interview back in 2023, he recalled capturing the featured image with a long lens from the window of his former apartment in Los Angeles. He also explained that he prefers domestic scenes over the iconic style of photographers like Terry O’Neill.
Their last album dropped at the end of 2022, and was given a glowing five-star review by NME, who described it as “a swashbuckling, strings-fuelled epic”.
It also saw the Sheffield band lock in an epic headline slot at Glastonbury 2023, and head out on a huge world tour – which they ended by bringing out James Ford and Miles Kane as special guests.
As for Helders, the drummer began 2025 by joining Cameo to help those affected by the wildfires in LA.
