Sugababes share ‘Weeds’: “One of the most beautiful songs we’ve ever worked on”

The trio, comprising Keisha Buchanan, Mutya Buena and Siobhán Donaghy, dropped the track as a surprise today (April 8), the same date they kick off their biggest-ever arena tour with a date at Leeds’ First Direct Arena, and it follows ‘Jungle’, which came out in March.

The band described the atmospheric track about friendship as “one of the most beautiful songs” they’ve worked on, explaining: “The love for ‘Jungle’ has been incredible, and watching it take on a life of its own has been amazing. But ‘Weeds’ reveals a whole other side of us, and we couldn’t think of a better time to drop it than on the first night of our arena tour.

“‘Weeds’ is one of the most beautiful songs we’ve ever worked on – it’s about growing together.  This one means a lot – we can’t wait for you to hear it.”

They worked with Grammy Award-winning Jon Shave, who produced ‘Jungle’, again for ‘Weeds’, while Anya Jones, who’s worked with the likes of Kylie Minogue, Lola Young and Purple Disco Machine, co-wrote the track.

Last month, Sugababes confirmed that they’re now independent – indeed, they released ‘Weeds’ on their own label The Orchard – and told NME that they’ve always put their own money into their music.

“Even when we were signed to a major for about three months, we invested our own money into the project,” said Buchanan. “We put £30,000 into [2013 single] ‘Flatline’ because we had no [label] support,” Buchanan added. “We actually get more out of doing it this way: self-investing and standing behind art that we’re proud of.”

When Buchanan, Buena and Donaghy reunited in 2011, they went by the name Mutya Keisha Siobhan (MKS). They won back the rights to the Sugababes name in 2019, 18 years after Donaghy became the first of the original trio to leave the band.

They played London’s Eventim Apollo in November 2022 in a huge comeback show, and NME gave it a five-star review, calling it “harmony-drenched pop nirvana”.

As for the current tour, Sugababes reassured fans that it won’t be preventing them from releasing new studio material. Buchanan said, “I don’t know how much we’re allowed to say, but there’s not going to be long gaps [between singles] because we have a good body of work waiting,” Buchanan said, with Buena adding, “Thank God!”

They explained that they launched their current era with ‘Jungle’ because it’s “unexpected” and “fun”, and harks back to their roots in London. Donaghy added, “We have another single coming that’s even more of a bop, but it could remind you of another [Sugababes] era, so it couldn’t come first,” Donaghy told NME.
