Sean Penn has responded to Madonna‘s comments calling him the “love of her life”.

The actor was married to the pop legend from 1985 to 1989; the pair also starred in 1986 movie Shanghai Surprise together. After their divorce they remained friends, with Madonna calling Penn the “love of her life” in her 1991 documentary Madonna: Truth Or Dare.

Now, Penn has responded to Madonna’s remarks 30 years later. Appearing on The Louis Theroux Podcast on Monday (May 12), Penn was asked whether he remembered what Madonna said about him in the documentary.

“I do,” he told Theroux, adding: “Look, she’s been a good friend for a lot of years.” He went on to call Madonna “very sweet” for her comments, but said: “It didn’t take us long to realise that we had mistaken a good first date for a wedding partner.

“It didn’t take us long to recover after we got divorced, maybe a year, in a friendship. I have a lot of fond memories of it – it’s not all jail.”

You can watch Penn talk about madonna around 51 minutes into the podcast below:

Madonna is reportedly teaming up with Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy for a limited series based on her life. The series is believed to be in early development at Netflix.

No word has been confirmed on the extent of Madonna’s involvement. Additionally, the screenplay for the Netflix series appears to be written from scratch, suggesting it will operate as an entirely separate project from the singer’s long-gestating biopic for Universal.

In other news, Sean Penn has said Trump lacks “intelligence” and only values “destruction of things and people”.

He is also slated to star in an “incredibly epic” Paul Thomas Anderson thriller alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, Benicio Del Toro, Regina Hall and Teyana Taylor. The film is loosely based on Thomas Pynchon’s 1990 novel Vineland and is scheduled to be released on September 26.
